Before Moving to Sweden – Things to Do in India

  1. Close all unnecessary bank accounts in India for you and your spouse. Maximum have 2 bank accounts.
  2. If you are leaving your Indian job and coming to Sweden, please convert your current Indian job Group Health Insurance policy to your private Health Insurance policy (Yes, it’s possible, call the insurance company).
  3. If you have a non-working spouse, kids, or parents financially dependent on you, then please take Life Insurance (Term Insurance) in India.
  4. Make an Aadhar card for your kids.
  5. If you plan to sell your apartment/land/real estate anytime soon, please sell it when you are a resident Indian. Once you become a resident in Sweden, you will be liable for tax on profit from real estate without the indexation benefit.
  6. Convert your mobile subscription to post-paid, else it’s a hassle to remember to recharge.
  7. Surrender all unnecessary credit cards.
  8. Make sure you have chosen a Nominee for all your savings/MF/Bank accounts/Investments in India.
  9. Withdraw EPF/Gratuity when you are a resident Indian, else it is taxable in Sweden if you withdraw when you are a tax resident in Sweden.
  10. ALL INCOME in INDIA is TAXABLE in SWEDEN.
  11. If you have a valid resident permit, visit your bank in India and convert your resident account to an NRO account.
  12. Update your Indian debit card settings with low values for ATM withdrawal, online shopping, and international withdrawal.
