Education Loan Aboard – Tax Deduction

Students from Abroad in Swedish Higher Education for the First Time

Quick facts:

  • Most students are in the age group of 22-29.
  • More women students take up education compared to men.
  • Most chosen courses are Engineering and Manufacturing, and Social Sciences, Law, Commerce, and Administration
    (maybe it’s bachelor degree).
  • Most chosen universities are:
    • Lund: 2349
    • Uppsala: 1825
    • Stockholm University: 1506
    • KTH: 1480
    • Göteborgs Universitet: 1154
    • Chalmers & Umeå: 750+ each

Students coming from Non-EU countries often have to take education loans from their home country
(only a few get scholarships) and need to repay a huge sum with significant interest back to the bank.

Many students repaying these loans have never claimed back tax deductions on the interest repaid
due to a lack of awareness of tax laws.

Important Note:

Until the year 2024, all education loan interest is eligible for deduction. However:

  • From 2025, only 50% of the interest repaid will be eligible for deduction.
  • From 2026, this deduction will be removed entirely.

This change is because loans backed by assets (like homes, cars, boats, etc.) are prioritized for deductions.

If you are one of these students, you can claim back taxes for up to 6 previous years.
