I am 100% convinced that we need health insurance in India, let me explain.

Living in Sweden / Europe, medical is covered by social security. So financially we are safe meaning any emergency, critical operation, or costly treatment is covered.

But getting the appointment with a specialist in Sweden can take time. We conducted a poll in our financial forum Facebook group and 52% of people voted that long waiting times to meet specialists and difficulty in getting appointments in Vårdcentral are common issues.

Do we need Health Insurance in India?

Example of my own case: A healthy individual passionate about running 10K for 3 years and suddenly in 2018 stuck with back pain in Sweden.

Visited Vårdcentral, they advised physio treatment, but no MRI was advised. Luckily, my company at that time in Sweden had a corporate group health insurance that provided access to an MRI, which showed a lower disc slip.

Instead of surgery, I preferred Ayurveda and visited Kottakal Arya Vaidya Sala, Kerala. I am happy with my recovery (slow but avoided surgery), and luckily my Indian health insurance came into play and provided full reimbursement.

NOTE: Remember, our parents live in India, and they also need health insurance. This is the best gift you can give to your parents. However, if they are already covered by your sibling’s corporate policy in India, great! Otherwise, consider health insurance for your parents but never combine your policy with theirs as it will be expensive.

We have collaborated with Ditto Insurance (a startup backed by Zerodha Founders). They provide a free 30-minute advisory service for Indian Residents / NRIs regarding health insurance. You can book the meeting here:
