This post sheds light on the essential aspect of Inkomstförsäkring, an inherent insurance offered by various unions in Sweden.
For expats, especially engineers and managers, the focus is on comparing the default income insurance provided by 3 unions. Sveriges Ingenjörer [Engineers of Sweden], for instance, offers coverage up to 100,000 Kr per month as the default option.
Conditions to Reap the Benefits of Inkomstförsäkring:
- The job loss must be involuntary.
- Membership in Akassa and the union for at least 12 months, coupled with 12 months of work experience.
(For detailed rules, please refer to the respective unions.) - Akassa covers a basic salary of up to 33,000 Kr/Month (Year 2025); the later part is only covered by Inkomstförsäkring.
For work permit holders, this insurance serves as a valuable addition to their financial strategy. Even if one receives
payments for just 3 months, it surpasses the premiums paid over the preceding 4 years before obtaining permanent residency.
It’s important to note that this is not a promotional post but rather a personal account from a member of Sveriges Ingenjörer for over 7 years.
Also, various unions offer supplementary insurance to increase the coverage.
