Sweden is one of the countries that pays higher salaries to employees than the actual salary shown in the offer letter.
Most private white-collar employees in Sweden receive the following amounts that are not included in the salary mentioned in the offer letter:
- Holiday Pay: When you take your summer vacation in Sweden, your employer pays an extra supplement. (Income tax applies here.)
- Occupation Pension: Every month, an occupation pension is paid into your pension accounts. Most private employees have an ITP pension agreement, where higher income leads to higher occupation pension.Note: Occupation pension is not mandatory in Sweden. This pension is locked until the age of 55, and tax applies when you withdraw it.
- Wellness Allowance: Most companies pay 3000 to 5000 SEK annually as a wellness allowance for sports, gym, or physical activities.
Dear HR: If you are reading this, please consider mentioning these benefits and also include the pension component paid to employees in the offer letter.
For individuals moving to Sweden for employment, understanding the ITP pension and collectively bargained agreements is essential but often overlooked.
