NRI accounts include NRE and NRO accounts. I prefer to connect my Indian mobile number with my NRO account and my international Sweden number with my NRE account.
Initially, I used my NRE account for UPI and booked a train ticket through IRCTC. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I was unable to travel and had to cancel my ticket. However, IRCTC was unable to refund my payment to my NRE account, as payments to NRE accounts can only come from outside India or from another NRE account.
Hence, the lesson learned from my experience is to use UPI for NRO accounts only, because anyone in India can pay money into your NRO account.
Having an Indian mobile number is very important, and I prefer to keep it as a postpaid number. Having a prepaid number requires me to remember to recharge it and to constantly check whether the number is active or not. To avoid these hassles, I prefer a postpaid number, as it is connected to all my Indian financial transactions and investments.
